Padouk and Quilted Maple Hall Table
34.5" x 56" x 15.5"
Andaman padouk, quilted big-leaf maple, cherry, and dogwood
I held onto that plank of big-leaf maple for about 15 years, waiting for the right piece to use it in. I knew this hall table would showcase it beautifully. Interestingly, as stunning as the maple is, the Andaman padouk is the true rarity. When I purchased it years ago (around the same time as the quilted maple), it was almost unobtainable, now, I can't find it anywhere. This padouk is very different than the common African variety which starts out a garrish orange and quickly oxidizes to a muddy brown. The Andaman holds its gorgeous color while deepening over the years.
The overall design of this piece came quickly, but the exact splay of the legs (they cant in both directions) took some time to get just right -- a few fractions of an inch one way or the other was too much or too little and looked very awkward. I think the result is very pleasing --quite literally a showstopper.
