Skinny Walnut Box
13" x 3" x 5"
Walnut, spalted maple, ebony and suede leather lining
This eccentric little box was born of a whim to work traditional joinery on a smaller scale in a box of unusual proportions. The ebony handle joins to the lid with through wedged tenons and is pinned with bamboo skewers. Through wedged tenons also join the base, and the base is pinned to the box with ebony pins. The dovetail joinery has a playful rhythm to its spacing. A suede lined interior makes a soft resting place for...what? Perhaps a Meisterstuck pen or handmade Damascus steel knife, a set of calligraphy brushes, a personal treasure... This piece graced the cover of the Peters Valley Crafts Center catalog several years ago when I taught there.
